Tranexamic acid and niacinamide are used together in some skincare formulations for the appearance of dark spots and uneven pigmentation. They have different proposed roles in pigmentation-related processes, which is one reason manufacturers combine them within a single serum.
This guide explains the combination, what clinical research can tell us, and how it appears in Alastin A-Luminate Brightening Serum. It concerns topical cosmetic skincare, not oral or injectable tranexamic acid.
What is topical tranexamic acid?
Tranexamic acid, often abbreviated to TXA, is an ingredient used in selected cosmetic products addressing uneven pigmentation. Research has investigated its effects on signalling pathways involved in pigmentation, as well as the performance of finished topical formulations.
The word “acid” does not mean it should be treated as an exfoliant such as glycolic or salicylic acid. Its role in a pigmentation serum is different.
Topical cosmetic use also needs to be distinguished from oral tranexamic acid. A serum’s directions and evidence cannot be transferred to a medicine taken by mouth.
What does niacinamide contribute?
Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 used in skincare for uneven tone and skin-barrier support. It is commonly included within multi-ingredient serums and moisturisers rather than necessarily requiring its own separate step.
When considering a pigmentation routine, check whether your existing products already contain niacinamide. Adding another serum with the same ingredient is not automatically necessary.
Why combine tranexamic acid and niacinamide?
A combined formula can address several aspects of visible skin quality within one application. Its performance depends on the concentrations, delivery system, supporting ingredients and the stability of the finished product.
Clinical research has examined topical regimens containing tranexamic acid and niacinamide together. For example, an eight-week study involving 22 participants assessed a cream-and-serum routine containing both ingredients, with a vitamin C derivative also included in the serum. Improvements were reported in measures of pigmentation and participant assessments.
That study was small and assessed a combined routine without a separate control group. It cannot isolate the contribution of each ingredient, and it was not a study of Alastin A-Luminate.
The useful distinction is between evidence supporting investigation of an ingredient combination and evidence for the particular product being considered.
Alastin A-Luminate: a formulation-specific example
Alastin A-Luminate Brightening Serum combines liposomal tranexamic acid and niacinamide with the brand’s proprietary PATH-3 Technology.
It is a hydroquinone-free and retinol-free facial serum intended to improve the appearance of dark spots, uneven tone and dullness. PATH-3 is designed to help minimise the recurrence of surface pigmentation with continued use.
The manufacturer describes tranexamic acid as being encapsulated in a liposome. This identifies a formulation approach; it does not, by itself, establish how the serum performs compared with another product.
What does A-Luminate’s clinical information show?
Alastin reports participant feedback from a multicentre, randomised, blinded study involving 43 participants:
- 86% reported a diminished appearance of dark spots and discolouration after eight weeks.
- 90% reported improved overall skin appearance after eight weeks.
- 90% reported brighter, more radiant-looking skin after twelve weeks.
These figures describe the proportion of participants reporting improvement. They do not mean an 86% reduction in pigmentation or a guaranteed outcome for an individual.
Is PATH-3 the same as TriHex or TriHex+?
No. PATH-3 is the named technology associated with A-Luminate’s pigmentation-focused formulation. Other Alastin products have different technologies and purposes.

Which pigmentation concerns need consideration?
Dark spots can have different causes. Marks following acne or irritation, melasma and sun-related pigmentation do not necessarily need the same approach.
A cosmetic serum may have a role in improving the appearance of uneven tone, but persistent or uncertain pigmentation benefits from assessment. Treating ongoing acne or inflammation can be as important as addressing existing marks.

How to include the combination in a routine
Follow the directions for the finished product rather than applying one universal schedule to every tranexamic-acid serum.
For A-Luminate, the manufacturer directs one to two pumps to the face after cleansing, morning and evening, with sunscreen included in the morning routine.
A practical structure is:
- Cleanse gently.
- Apply the selected treatment according to its directions.
- Use moisturiser where needed.
- Apply sunscreen separately in the morning.
There is no need to add several separate pigmentation serums simply because their ingredients work through different proposed pathways. A manageable routine also makes it easier to identify which product is causing irritation.
Can it be combined with vitamin C or retinoids?
Some routines include these ingredients, but compatibility and tolerance depend on the complete products. Follow their instructions and introduce changes individually.
Using different products in morning and evening routines can simplify application when appropriate. It does not guarantee that the combined routine will be comfortable for every person.
