NAD Serums: Benefits, Ingredients and How to Use Them

Clear serum droplet beside the title “NAD+ in skincare: Science, benefits & serums”.

An NAD serum is a topical skincare formula built around NAD+ or ingredients associated with its production. The category connects skincare with research into cellular energy and ageing. For someone choosing a serum, the useful question is how a particular formulation translates that science into the visible results they want.

What does NAD+ have to do with skin?

NAD+ is involved in energy metabolism and in processes that maintain cellular function. That makes it relevant to the biology of living skin. It also explains why NAD+ appears in discussions of skin longevity: the scientific interest concerns how cells function as well as how skin looks.

For a fuller explanation of the molecules and pathways, see our NAD+ skincare information hub. Here, the focus is choosing a topical product and giving it a useful place in a routine.

Which benefits should you look for?

Look for results that match your priorities: fine-line appearance, tone, radiance, texture or hydration, for example. Then check whether the manufacturer has assessed those outcomes in the finished formula. “NAD serum” describes a category, so it cannot by itself tell you how every product in that category performs.

A good product explanation should connect the ingredient story with the outcome. If the claim is smoother-looking skin, you should be able to identify whether that came from participant feedback, clinical assessment or an instrumental measurement, and over what period.

NAD+, NMN and niacinamide on an ingredient label

These names are related but not interchangeable. NAD+ is the coenzyme; NMN and niacinamide are precursors involved in its production. Some formulations combine them.

Niacinamide also has a direct topical research history. That means its presence can be relevant for reasons beyond the NAD+ pathway. If you already use it, review your existing products before deciding whether another standalone niacinamide step serves a purpose.

Why the whole formulation matters

A laboratory ingredient and a serum applied to skin are different things. Stability, delivery and the other components of the formula influence the product being developed. Research on topical NMN delivery, for example, has examined specialised carriers to address challenges with skin penetration and stability.

This is a reason to pay attention to finished-product evidence. It is also a reason not to rank serums by the prominence of one acronym or an unsupported assumption that a higher concentration must be better.

Where does an NAD serum go in a routine?

Follow the directions for the specific serum. A practical starting structure is cleansing, your directed treatment steps, moisturiser if needed and sunscreen in the morning. When combining several treatments, product-specific instructions take priority over a universal layering rule.

For morning protection, choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Broad-spectrum protection covers UVA and UVB; an ingredient's role in cellular biology does not supply a sunscreen rating.

Our skincare layering guide explains how to think about the order of your wider routine.

What if you already use vitamin C or retinol?

Start by identifying what each existing product is doing for you. Then decide whether the new serum adds a useful function or creates unnecessary overlap. Compatibility depends on the complete products and how your skin tolerates the routine, rather than just their headline ingredients.

If you are introducing several new treatments, simplify the process: establish one change before making the next. This gives you a clearer understanding of comfort and tolerability without requiring an elaborate routine.

A formulation to consider: Obagi Nu-Gen

Obagi Nu-Gen Cellular Renewal Serum 30ml is an option to consider when you want a named NAD+ formulation with published manufacturer-reported clinical outcomes. Its product page brings the results, ingredients and directions together so you can assess the serum against your priorities.

The reasons for considering a premium serum should be specific: relevant evidence, a formulation you understand and a useful role in your routine. Those are more meaningful than a fashionable ingredient name alone.
