Exosomes are extracellular vesicles that act as cellular messengers, carrying proteins, growth factors, and genetic material between cells to coordinate tissue repair, inflammation regulation, and regeneration. In skincare, topically applied exosomes deliver these same biological signals to skin cells — triggering repair and renewal at a cellular level. For a full explanation of the science, see our complete science guide to exosomes.
This article covers the practical side: who exosome skincare is suited to, how to use it, what to expect, and how it compares to other advanced treatments.
Who is exosome skincare suited to?
- Those recovering from aesthetic procedures — laser, microneedling, chemical peels, radiofrequency
- Sensitive, reactive, or inflamed skin that does not tolerate conventional actives well
- Compromised skin barriers — including post-procedure, eczema, or atopic dermatitis
- Those seeking anti-ageing support — fine lines, loss of firmness, uneven texture
- Hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone
- Scalp health and hair thinning
Exosomes are cell-free and work with the skin's natural processes, making them well tolerated across all skin types including sensitive and reactive skin.
How to use exosome skincare
- Cleanse skin thoroughly
- Apply 2–3 pumps to clean, dry skin — press gently into skin rather than rubbing
- Allow to absorb fully (2–3 minutes) before applying other products
- Follow with moisturiser if needed
- Apply SPF 50 in the morning
Exosomes are compatible with most skincare actives. Apply before moisturisers and SPF. When using alongside vitamin C, apply vitamin C first and wait 2–3 minutes before applying exosomes. When using alongside tretinoin, apply exosomes in the morning and tretinoin at night, or alternate as directed by your prescriber. Avoid layering with strong acids (AHAs, BHAs) in the same application.
The EXO|E range
EXO|E D|TOX — formulated for pre-procedure preparation and daily detoxification. Applied twice daily for 5 days before an aesthetic procedure to prime the skin, reduce baseline inflammation, and optimise treatment outcomes. Also suitable as a standalone daily treatment for congested, dull, or pollution-stressed skin.
EXO|E RE|PAIR — formulated for post-procedure recovery and regeneration. Applied twice daily for 5 days after a procedure to reduce inflammation, accelerate healing, and amplify results. Also suitable as a standalone daily treatment for anti-ageing, barrier repair, and skin rejuvenation.
EXO|E D|TOX + RE|PAIR Kit — both products together for a complete pre- and post-procedure protocol.
Results timeline
Days 1–7: Improved hydration, reduced redness and irritation, calmer skin.
Weeks 2–4: Smoother texture, more even tone, improved barrier function, faster healing of blemishes.
Weeks 4–12: Visible reduction in fine lines, improved firmness and elasticity, fading of hyperpigmentation.
3+ months: Sustained anti-ageing improvements, optimised skin health with continued use.
Exosomes vs other advanced treatments
vs PRP (platelet-rich plasma): PRP requires a blood draw and professional administration. Exosomes are applied topically, require no needles for at-home use, and offer standardised potency rather than variability between treatments.
vs microneedling alone: Microneedling creates channels for product penetration and stimulates wound healing. Combining exosomes with microneedling enhances penetration and adds regenerative signalling — producing superior results to either treatment alone.
vs peptides: Peptides send a single type of instruction to skin cells. Exosomes deliver hundreds of different signalling molecules simultaneously, creating a more comprehensive regenerative response.
Safety considerations
Exosome skincare is generally very well tolerated. Side effects are rare — mild temporary redness or slight tingling on application may occur and typically resolves quickly. Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have active skin infections, or have autoimmune conditions should consult their healthcare provider before use.
